North Coast Beginning Teacher Program

PRINCIPALS

Principals play an important role in the success of new teachers. Through joint efforts, school administrators and the North Coast Beginning Teacher Program recruit more teachers into the profession, support new teachers in becoming fully qualified and credentialed, increase new teacher retention rates, and improve the quality of the educational experiences for students.

Principals increase the success of teachers participating in the North Coast Beginning Teacher Program in a variety of ways.  Thank you for your support of new teachers and for your ongoing dedication to their success!

Here are a few important highlights of the role of the school administrator:

  • Work with the District Coordinator to select support providers who meet selection criteria

  • Identify all beginning teachers eligible to participate in one of the credential programs (Interns, BTSA 1st and 2nd year, Out of State, Designated Subjects and Education Specialists) or identify paraprofessionals eligible to participate in the financial support program

  • Match support providers with new teachers (preferred match includes same site and similar grade level, credential authorization and subject matter) within 30 days of employment

  • Conduct initial Orientation for new teachers to inform them about site resources, personnel, health and safety, and special education policies and procedures

  • Limit extracurricular duties for both new teachers and support providers, scheduling common prep time, whenever possible

  • Provide release time for classroom observations for new teachers and support providers

  • Provide opportunities for ongoing professional development

  • Allocate resources to support new teachers’ professional growth (e.g. workshops, materials, release time for observations)

  • Provide mileage reimbursement to attend professional development, when possible

  • Facilitate distribution of support provider compensation

  • Attend Administrators’ training, workshops, and/or informational meetings
